LOVER'S TEMPO
Jewelry CareWhether you're wearing gold-plated, gold-vermeil or gold-filled, there are some golden rules that you'll want to follow to care for all of your pieces. All plated jewelry will tarnish over time due to general wear, moisture, naturally occurring oils on skin and exposure to air.
Avoid Moisture
This means skin & hair products too! If your pieces come in contact with moisture, gently wipe clean with a soft cloth.
Last On, First Off
Your jewelry should be the last thing you put on in the AM and the first thing you take off at night. Never wear your jewelry to bed, while exercising, washing your hands, in the shower, or swimming.
Clean
After each wear, wipe your jewelry with a soft cloth before putting away.
Store Safely
Always store your cleaned jewelry in a sealed bag or box. Keep your jewels stored in a cool, dry place (ie. not in your bathroom) to limit exposure to moisture and oxygen.
Hair Accessories
All of our hair accessories feature metal componentry which does not hold up well to moisture. Exposure to water will cause rusting and impact the lifespan of your claw or clip.
Gold-Filled Jewelry Only (NOT gold-plated)
If the gold starts to discolour, we recommend giving it a thorough clean. Soak it in a bowl of warm water and then rub it with a cotton rag or a soft-bristled brush to return its lustre.
Gold-plated? Gold Vermeil? What does this all mean? Let’s break it down:
Gold-Plated
Gold-plated jewelry has a layer of real gold over top of a less expensive base metal. The majority of jewelry we make is gold-plated over brass. This allows for beautiful designs at great price points, while maintaining a good standard of quality. Unless otherwise indicated on the packaging, your jewelry is gold-plated.
Gold Vermeil
Gold vermeil jewelry is a thick layer of real gold over a sterling silver base. Since this type of gold jewelry is made of real gold and silver (both precious metals), it costs more than gold-plated jewelry but significantly less than solid gold jewelry. Over time, gold vermeil jewelry will tarnish so should be worn with proper care. Our Sustainable Demi-Fine Collection is made of gold vermeil with recycled sterling silver and responsibly sourced precious metals.
Gold Filled
Gold-filled jewelry is highly regarded for its quality and value compared to solid gold. It is water and tarnish resistant, although it is still advisable to minimize contact with moisture to keep its shine. Gold-filled is a strictly regulated product that legally requires 1/20th or 5% of pure karat gold by weight. All of our gold-filled jewelry is made of 5% 14K gold by weight over a brass core.

Gold-Plated
All of our jewelry is electroplated (“plated” for short). Electroplating is a process that uses chemistry and electricity to cover metal in a thin layer of gold. By dipping the jewelry in a solution that contains gold and applying electricity, a thin layer of gold attaches itself to the jewelry pieces. The overall colour/tone of the gold jewelry is determined by how long the process is applied.
Different trends and designs dictate the tone of our gold-plating from 10K-18K gold. The trend today is a lighter gold, so we currently strive for a 10K-14K gold look. Since electroplating is done by hand, there may be slight variations each time this process is done.
Silver-Plated
We use the same electroplating process on our silver-plated jewelry except that silver is used in the chemical solution, instead of gold. Please see “Gold-Plated” for details on the electroplating process.
Rhodium-plated
Rhodium is a precious metal and a member of the platinum family. Rhodium is a high-shine metal that gives pieces a cooler tone as opposed to silver-plated pieces which have a slightly warmer look. The same process for electroplating is used for our rhodium-plated pieces. Please see “Gold-Plated" for details on the electroplating process.
Recycled Silver
Recycled silver produces approx 14.5 tonnes of CO2e/tonne metal. Using recycled silver cuts down CO2 emissions by ⅔ versus mined silver.
The metal supplier we work with purchases silver from previously owned jewelry, industrial metals, and electronics components globally, but mostly located in Thailand. The unwanted precious metal is then refined through a process of scrap refining technique to purify the metal, and then transformed into new silver in the form of casting grains.
This regenerated silver can then be re-casted and made into new silver jewelry again.
All the metal scrap created from the factory are recycled back into the system, creating no waste. A filtering system collects dust particles of precious metals, so they can be reused again.
Responsibly Sourced Silver
When recycled silver is not an option, our demi-fine collection utilizes responsibly sourced silver instead. Our silver refiner supplier is listed on the LBMA's (London Bullion Market Association) Good Delivery List - the global authority on precious metals. They are also certified members of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC).
Sterling Silver Posts
Sterling silver is an alloy containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.
Brass
Brass is an alloy made of copper and zinc. Brass is durable and quite workable. We use brass in a large selection of our jewelry.
Base Metal
Base metals are any metals that are commonly found and considered the opposite of precious metals (gold, silver, palladium and platinum). Some examples of base metals include copper, zinc, nickel and aluminum. Base metals allow us to get creative and design truly unique pieces while making our jewelry accessible
Chains
We use brass chains in a number of different finishes. Our most commonly used finishes are:
- Gold-plated
- Rhodium-plated
- Bronze-plated
- Enamel coated
Swarovski Elements Crystals
Swarovski Crystals are known for their exceptional brilliance and intense luminosity. We use loose Swarovski Crystal flatbacks that have platinum foiling for extra radiance and protection.
Cubic Zirconia
Cubic zirconia is a man-made gemstone that is normally used to replicate the look of diamonds. Although not as precious, we think that cubic zirconias are beautiful and great to work with because they are strong and virtually flawless. Also, while naturally colourless, cubic zirconia now comes in a rainbow of colours when different trace minerals are added during the manufacturing process. Cubic zirconia is ethical, sustainable, and conflict-free because it is not mined.
Cellulose Acetate
Cellulose acetate is a recyclable bioplastic made by taking the cellulose fibers from wood pulp. Starting as a clear paste, colour can be added and then it is molded into various shapes. This material has recently made a huge resurgence in jewelry and allows for a range of playful, vibrant components that imitate natural materials, such as tortoise shell or bone. Unlike cheaper plastic alternatives, cellulose acetate is made to last.
Gemstones
Gemstones are a range of mineral crystals, rocks and organic materials (ie. pearls) that are cut, polished and formed to make jewelry. We use a range of gemstones, most commonly, labradorite, quartz, shell and pearl.
Crystal Beads
Along with Swarovski Crystal flatbacks, we use chinese crystal beads in an array of shapes, colours and sizes. Chinese crystals are machine cut for the sharpest angles that reflect light and result in a radiant sparkle.
Cotton
Our scrunchies, scarves, and pink cotton pouches are made from 100% cotton for a lightweight product that's easy to care for.
